The Indian Contingent will be very happy with their performance at the Youth Olympic Games which was concluded today. With a total of 13 medals in the bag, this was India’s best performance at the Youth Olympic games ever since its inception.
The last day ended on a high for India as Archer Akash Malik scripts India’s 9th Silver after losing to USA’s Trenton Cowles 0-6 in the final.
Akash had made a good start to the final with 10 in his first attempt, but he shot a 6 in his second attempt. He recovered to shoot another 10 in his third but ended up losing first set 26-28. Akash lost the next two sets 26-28 and 27-29 and could never recover against a determined Cowles.
With Akash, this Game will also be remembered as some of the firsts’ for India:
– Jeremy Lalrinnuga became the first person to win a Gold Medal for India at the Youth Olympic Games, who won it in Weightlifting 48 kg category.
– Manu Bhaker became the first woman to win a Gold Medal for India at the Youth Olympic Games.
– India for the first time crossed the double-digit mark at the Youth Olympic Games.
Overall, India will be very happy as they sign off from the games and this performance will also reflect the kind of efforts that have been put behind the scenes on these young athletes by the Government and the Federations.
